Introduction
Stop Scrolling is a Chrome browser extension that tracks time spent on social media and distracting websites. This privacy policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and how it is stored. We are committed to protecting your privacy — the extension is designed to work entirely locally on your device.
Data Collected
The extension accesses the following information:
- Tab URLs:The extension reads the URL of your active browser tab to determine if it matches a website in your tracked list. Only the hostname (e.g. "youtube.com") is extracted — no full URLs, page titles, or page content are stored.
- Time records: The extension records the number of seconds spent on each tracked website per day.
- User preferences: Your list of tracked websites, alert thresholds, and settings (such as idle detection preference) are stored locally.
- Tab audio state: The extension checks whether the active tab is playing audio to determine if media is active during idle detection. This information is not stored.
Data Storage
All data is stored exclusively in your browser using Chrome's local storage API (chrome.storage.local). Data never leaves your device. There is no server, no database, no cloud storage, and no external service involved. Time records older than 60 days are automatically deleted from storage.
Data Sharing
The extension does not transmit, share, or sell any data to third parties. No analytics, tracking pixels, or external scripts are used. The extension does not make any network requests.
Permissions Used
- tabs: To read the active tab URL and detect which tracked website you are visiting.
- storage: To save tracking data, preferences, and alert settings locally on your device.
- alarms: To periodically save data and prevent loss if the browser closes unexpectedly.
- notifications: To alert you when a self-defined time threshold is exceeded on a tracked website.
- idle: To detect when you are away from your computer and pause tracking (when enabled).
- host_permissions: To access the URL of any active tab for matching against your tracked websites. No page content is read or modified.
Your Control
You have full control over your data at all times. You can add or remove tracked websites, configure or delete alerts, and toggle idle detection in the extension settings. Uninstalling the extension permanently deletes all stored data from your browser.
